Jasper of St. Augustine
|
For twenty five years she lived with her mother just outside a reclusive village near the Sheridane Mountain range. They lived in a medium sized cottage which her mother owned as home and store front for the villagers and travelers. Her mother was a skilled herbalist and healer and taught Jasper everything she knew from the moment Jasper was coherent enough to make her first memory. It would be an art ingrained in her soul. None throughout the land were as skilled as her mother and Jasper was her only child. Jasper hunted for food with her mother and therefore became skilled in the use of a bow and arrow, dagger and sling. Her mother took notice of how simple it was for Jasper to learn to master these weapons and how it seemed that the forest obeyed her by bringing game to her weapon, as if Jasper were commanding it subconsciously and the forest had no choice but to obey.
Through the years, Jasper's mother, Maiya, kept a clean home and aside from teaching Jasper the art of herbs and healing, she did not speak much of her past, if at all. In fact, Jasper was often frustrated by her mother's silence when she would ask questions of the world and how she got here. Early, she learned that such questions upset her mother immensely and caused only harm to their relationship.
Although the story of her life is a happy one, soon Jasper's stoic joy would come to a halt upon her mother's sudden departure from the mortal world. Even with all the knowledge her mother passed to her, Jasper could do nothing to heal Maiya from the grip of death and could only sit and watch her mother deteriorate before her. The inhabitants of the village were very kind in honoring a funeral service for Maiya, as she had been a key source to their health and herbal supplies. Jasper began asking questions of the villagers to find out if they knew anything at all that would tell her of who her father had been, but very few could tell her anything remotely substantial. If it were not for her haunting and disturbing dreams, she would have entirely dropped the subject, trusting her mother's words of caution as she often did. But she knew, deep down, that without the answers, she would never learn of her true identity or her background so she chose to be inquisitive instead.
One thing that Jasper had always noticed was how different her mother was from the people in the village. Not that she looked non-human, but it was her mannerisms that set her apart. Her movements were sleek, graceful, beyond human. She honored the Earth and respected Nature above anything else. She performed many rituals of the seasons along others which brought protection of the Light into their home. Jasper seemed to have inherited these mannerisms from her mother but on a much different level. When Jasper walked or entered a room, everyone noticed - not because she was loud and crass, but because she moved like a lithe seductress. Her body seemed to meld and flow perfectly as if she were made of liquid, making her way with snakelike grace. But the intrigue did not end with merely the way she moved. It seemed that she possessed a type of darkness within her which was not limited to her physical dark features - such as her stunningly thick and beautiful ebony locks, her golden skin, her svelte 6-foot-tall figure and her eyes which would shift in color from a navy blue to a color almost like midnight, all of which were opposites of her own mother's fair and light features. There was something in her soul that made Darkness itself seem akin to her very being. When she talked, her voice was that of a dark siren's song, attracting those within range of it and at the same time, putting a strange feeling of caution in the gut. Jasper often used these talents of seduction to her advantage, especially with men who had anything her youthful heart might have desired. She would travel outside the outskirts of the village into neighboring villages, asking questions about the world around her, always curious regarding the arcane arts.
When her mother passed away, Jasper found within an old chest the records of an address and correspondence written in a language she did not understand. The handwriting was archaic and somewhat unwelcoming to look upon. Nevertheless, having had enough of country-side life and feeling deep inside that she was suited for something much more grand and daring, she hired a pageboy to find out whether she'd be able to get established selling herbs, spices, healing potions and other knick knacks in this mysterious city of Saint Augustine, where the letters to her mother came from. Soon, she heard back that such a shop was in fact available and it would be ready to occupy by the time she arrived. Keeping a small inheritance from her mother and packing up all the belongings, including the supplies needed to open a shop of herbs, she rode away from the village with horse and wagon, not ever planning to return there.

The Shop

| Located at a major intersection in downtown St. Augustine, Jasper's shop of herbs, spices, potions, handmade clothing and jewelry, books and other assorted items catches a lot of gazes and draws in respectable business. She is happy thus far with the shop's location and the easy manner in which she has settled. |

| Right above the store is where Jasper lives and with some of the money her mother had left her, she furnished it comfortably and serenely, although it does sometimes feel as if beneath the facade of comfort and peace, there might be a deep, unfamiliar darkness lurking. Such is the darkness of her dreams and especially now that she has arrived at St. Augustine, she has noticed the vividness of her dreams increasing, making her more eager to pursue her goal and sure that she has come to a place that will offer her answers about who she is. |
